It is a real question. What is your house really worth? Sure it is an asset to buy and eventually sell, or pass down to your children. But some house owners treat it like their mansion. The question is, it it your home, or is it just a motel.
“Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” Matthew 6:19 – 21.
We all want nice homes with nice furnishing and art. We all like the idea of having nice clothes and lots of shoes. In some cases more is spent on buying redundant possessions than in helping the homeless or feeding the hungry.
“But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ,” Phil 3:20.
When Jesus returns, all that we have will be burned up. So what is your house really worth? Is it worth all the money you put into it, and the lawn and the trees? I am not saying do not make your home comfortable and looking nice. I am saying that it is temporary. “Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” Matthew 6:31-33.
These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For those who say such things declare plainly that they seek a homeland. And truly if they had called to mind that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return. But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them. Hebrews 11:13-16.
