Recently, the question of what to prepare for Sabbath morning for the family has come up a few times. Friday, the sixth day, is the preparation day and typically, we think about preparing not only our homes and ourselves for Sabbath, but our meals. However, breakfast is typically not a meal we think about preparing on Friday. I will dig into whether it is ok to avoid cooking on the Sabbath and yet cook our breakfasts in a later post, but today, I want to make a few suggestions for breakfasts that can be prepared on Friday and will be fresh and tasty on Sabbath morning.
Here are some delicious Sabbath breakfast ideas you can prepare on Friday and reheat or serve easily on Sabbath morning:
1. Baked Oatmeal
Preparation: Combine oats, milk (or plant-based milk), sweetener, fruit (like bananas or berries), and spices (like cinnamon or nutmeg) in a casserole dish and bake it on Friday.
Serving: Reheat individual portions in the oven or microwave. You can add a drizzle of maple syrup or a splash of milk before serving.
2. Breakfast Burritos
Preparation: Fill whole-grain tortillas with scrambled tofu (or eggs if preferred), sautéed veggies, beans, and cheese. Wrap tightly in foil and refrigerate.
Serving: Warm the burritos in the oven on Sabbath morning, still wrapped in foil.
3. Vegetable Quiche or Frittata
Preparation: Make a crustless quiche or frittata with vegetables, cheese, and eggs (or a tofu-based vegan alternative). Bake in a pie dish and refrigerate.
Serving: Slice and reheat in the oven or microwave.
4. Pancakes or Waffles
Preparation: Make extra pancakes or waffles on Friday and store them in an airtight container or freeze them.
Serving: Reheat in the oven, toaster, or microwave. Serve with fruit compote or nut butter.
5. Granola with Yogurt or Milk
Preparation: Prepare homemade granola with rolled oats, nuts, dried fruit, and honey (or agave syrup). Store in an airtight container.
Serving: Serve with yogurt or milk (dairy or plant-based) for a no-reheat option.
6. Sweet Potato Breakfast Bowls (YUM!)
Preparation: Roast sweet potatoes on Friday. Mash or slice them, and season with cinnamon, nutmeg, or a touch of maple syrup. Store in the fridge.
Serving: Reheat and top with nuts, seeds, and a dollop of yogurt or a drizzle of almond butter.
7. Muffins or Scones
Preparation: Bake your favorite muffins (e.g., banana, blueberry, or bran) or scones on Friday.
Serving: Serve at room temperature or warm slightly in the oven.
8. Chia Pudding
Preparation: Mix chia seeds with milk, a sweetener, and vanilla extract, and let it set overnight in the fridge. Add fruit or nuts on top.
Serving: Serve chilled or at room temperature.
9. Savory Breakfast Sandwiches
Preparation: Assemble sandwiches with English muffins, cheese, and cooked vegan sausage or tofu (or eggs if preferred). Wrap tightly in foil and refrigerate.
Serving: Warm in the oven on Sabbath morning.
10. Fruit Salad
Preparation: Chop and mix fresh fruits (like berries, melon, pineapple, and oranges) on Friday. Add a squeeze of lemon or lime juice to keep it fresh.
Serving: Serve chilled as a light and refreshing breakfast option.
These ideas should provide a variety of options to suit your taste and make your Sabbath morning enjoyable and restful.
